I don't have a USR modem, I've got a Zoom, but they're pretty much the same
under the hood...
First, your control panel should be set up for defaults except for 19200 baud
and (I use anyway) buffering.
Second, you should have the following on your modem (use at&v to show...)
F0 N1 Q0 Y0 +++(sorry...)
F0 N1 Q0 &C0 &D2 &K0 &Q5 &S0 %C3 \G0 \L0 \N3
these are all the error-correcting and speed-adapting settings. Issue an
AT command to set them, and then an at&w0 to save them in profile 0. Then
issue an at&y0 for an initialization string. ATF0 and ATN1 are the same, but
you can do them both anyway...
If you're still having problems, try issuing an AT&F (restore factory default)
and then an AT&C0&D2&K0&S0 to set everything which might not normally be set.
