ProDOS 8 returns unsupported storage_type when you try to rename an extended
file. BASIC reports it as an I/O error. This has to be a bug or oversight in
the code since there's no reason under the sun for it.

I think the current Prosel 8 utils are extended file savvy. I know the last
Beach Comber 32 will work and Cat Doctor too I think.
