BOOTING BOTH 16-BIT AND 8-BIT PROGRAMS FROM IIGS HARD DRIVE:
HOW SHOULD HARD DRIVE BE PARTITIONED AND FORMATTED?
----===================================================----
I have a 31 meg SCSI Seagate hard drive, used for the past year with my IIe
but now connected (Rev. C Apple II SCSI card) to my IIgs. I have used it
as a single 31 meg partition, using only 8-bit programs. Nine megabytes
if software is installed.
While playing with Copy II PLus 9.0, I damaged the software and now it will
not boot from the hard drive. This then is the time to reformat the drive
for 16-bit IIgs software.
What I want to do is to be able to boot my 8-bit software (still used
heavily), _and also boot_ from the hard drive some 16-bit applications
such as games, etc.
QUESTIONS:
Can both ProDos-8 and GS/OS be booted from the same HD partition?
If they must be on separate partitions, what will be the best way to do it?
(I figure 8 megs for ProDos-8 and 23 megs for Prodos-16.) Which partition
should go first?
I have a six disk set of backups called "System 6.0.1" but no docs. Is this
version better than GS/OS? Without docs I have done nothing with those disks.
I also have a "System 6" book published by Quality Computers. Is System 6
the best? Is it hard to install on the hard drive?
Step-by-step advice will be appreciated. Right now I am booting from
slow floppies.....
BTW, the 31 meg hard drive functions perfectly. The software found no
bad blocks among 62000 on the hard drive. Even though its a Seagate,
there are no bad blocks...... B-]
Advice appreciated!
