I saw an article once that said to try WD40.  If that doesn't work, you can 
try soaking the tip in alcohol for a few minutes and then using the WD40.  
After this, run the printer a little bit in test mode without a ribbon.

If you are careful, you don't have much to lose.  You can probably buy a 
used printer cheaper than the repair costs anyway :)
