I think cable/termination is bad some where.

I have a floptical too, if the floptical access light stays on when you
power up the IIgs, it seems to indicate termination power is supplied
(from my experience).

I have seen this before, I'd have to say it's more like cabling... Might
wanna try to borrow some cables.
