Problem went "Perpendicular" on me!

[begin long story]
Ever since I got my first Apple a decade (wow, that long?) ago
I had a strange problem with it. Using a joystick sometimes when you
pushed it to the extreme left (or thereabouts) pdl 0 would suddenly
"flip" on me and register 255 (extreme right) rather than the expected 0.
Told mom about this, I figured there was something wrong with the Apple
"Joystick IIe" we (well, she =^) shelled out $60 for, so we took it
back to the store (major dealer identity withheld =^). Went in the
back with the resident tech-geek to check it out. He popped in
Choplifter (pirated, btw. =^) The joystick worked fine, and I was passed
off as nuts. Anyway the problem pretty much existed ever since but
I got adjusted to it (just don't push the stick _that_ far. =^)
...years later, I got the enhancement kit and the thought
"wonder if that joystick thing got fixed?" but never checked it out since
I had long removed the joystick and damn if I was going to twist my
wrist to plug it in again (used the 16-pin socket inside)
...last year, I found another joystick at Goodwill (for $10,
originally $60 =^) but never used it until... ...tonight I was organizing
& packing stuff (btw... anyone need empty 5.25 disk banks?) and came
across the joystick, and since I had all these disks laying around
I naturally decided to play some.
But first, check out the joystick, ran the simple "1 ?pdl(0),
pdl(1): goto 1" program and the old problem seemed fixed! I could
push left without worry of going right. Then while playing games,
I noticed something funny... I'd go down when trying to go up...
Reset into Applesoft and run the pdl program... The old problem
which plagued the x-axis, "mutated" and does it's handiwork on the
y-axis!
Anyone got any ideas on this?
[end long story]

...on a side thing, dunno if it's related, before I got the
enhancement kit, when I ran the self check (ctrl-CA-reset) 97% of the
time I'd get "KERNEL OK", but the rest of the time I'd get "IOU EFLAG 1"
(I think it was "1"...) I haven't turned up anything unusual yet with
the self check ever since getting the enhancement.
