I don't think you're talking about the same thing.  The problem you're having
is that several text programs (probably including ProTERM, I don't know about
GBBS) don't use the event manager, or the mouse interrupt vector, so it's
harder to detect mouse movement from them.  I also check the mouse delta
register in I/O space, but only at 1/10 second intervals (1/60 second when the
ball's bouncing).  Try continuously moving the mouse relatively rapidly; the
screen should unblank.  So far, I haven't come up with a fool-proof way of
always detecting mouse movement in such programs without loading down the
system excessively.
