Try option-` (the backwards single quote) before the letter.

On my Imagewriter (Imagewriter II, actually), control-H works just fine.
It's probably impossible to get Appleworks GS to send control-H, but it
wouldn't be very useful to do so anyway, since AWGS wants to print
everything with graphics.
Appleworks (non-GS) can be made to print control characters by going into
the printer configuration area, adding a custom printer, and telling it
that your printer uses that control character to activate boldface, or
underlining, or some other feature (of course, you have to sacrifice
the "real" function of that feature in order to do so).
