You'll never achieve 100% efficiency, but, with a program like Spectrum, 
and the port drive set to 57600 bps, you will be able to send data to the 
modem at that rate and take advantage of the compression that takes place 
in the modem.  The same works in reverse but you risk the loss of some 
characters if you do something invokes a system interupt.  (like moving 
the mouse).  You can't lose characters you send but it is possible to 
lose characters that you are receiving.   An accelerated GS helps.  I 
have a Zip 9/64, a Dynalink 1414VQE, and Spectrum.  They are a good 
combination.   :-)
