Repeat problem: USR Sportster on ][GS...

I know this problem has been posted before, but because I didn't have a
14.4K modem (still in the 2400 baud era) I never read 'em... As you may
have guessed, however, I now have one and have some problems... My current
setup is a USRobotics Sportster 14,400 FAX MODEM. This, of course, was not
listed in any of the Proterm install listings (I switch between version 2.1
and 3.0), so I picked each of the USR modems and I even tried a Hayes
Smartmodem configuration. No go. IF the software managed to startup right
(which was rare and appeared to happen only when the seconds since epoch
was a prime number or something else unrelated to the init string setting),
then it wouldn't do much else.

My solution was to change the init string to read AT&F2 which loads a
"Software flow control template" from ROM and configures the modem
itself (apparently none of my attempts did the same thing). This seems
to work fine at least for 9600 baud, which is the only setting I've been
able to test. I doubt things are going to work flawlessly when I attempt
to use the built in compression stuff. Any suggestions out there?
Anyone else have a sportster working on a GS? What are your modem port
settings and init string? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
in advance.
