Mac/Apple IIGS compatibility question

Greetings!  Got a quick question, please respond via email as I do not frequent
this group.  My mother has been writing a book on an Apple IIGS using Claris
Appleworks, I believe.  She just bought a Macintosh Performa, and would like to
continue her work on the Mac.  I remember rumors that Macintoshes would read
Apple IIGS files, is this true?  Do I have to aquire any desktop tools or
translation programs to accomplish this for her?  Where might I find them?
