Seems you were right, the problem is now gone! I had a simular problem
with an old 'Apple Monitor II' screen, where playing with the brightness knob
(as you describe above) cleared away a kind of snow which appeared each time
it was adjusted. My AppleColor RGB looked as though it might "die" if I
started playing with the brightness-control, but I guess I was wrong.. :)
The only other problem with this screen is cosmetic. The casing is
somewhat discolored because it was exposed directly to sun light for a number
of years before I owned it. However, I do have a newer screen manufactured
in 1990 with a nice case (but low quality picture-tube). Would it be possible
to transplant the CRT from the 1987 monitor into the 1990 monitor? Are the
components inside compatible...?

So neither problem is connected to the internal brightness, focus
or tint controls inside? I may take it in for repairs with my fourth RGB
screen. It's previous owner dropped it and it stop working. If I plug it in
(the fourth screen) the power lught comes on for a brief moment and remains
off afterwards. The display is completely blank of course, like the flyback
transformer is disconnected or dead. Any ideas what's wrong with this screen?
(I should probably take the whole lot of them in for repairs! ;-)
