IIGS hardware questions
Hello,
I just ran across an article I had saved many months ago,
dealing with a hardware problem on certain IIGS' that caused transfers
to fail because it didn't recognize the CTS signal properly. It
outlined a method to fix it by soldering a resister between two
pins of a chip on the motherboard. Mine has the problem chip, and
before I attempt this, I'm curious if anyone else has ever tried
this fix with success?
The article also mentioned a software fix for proterm, in
the form of a new driver. I've never heard of one being released,
has anybody else? Actually, I'd rather fix the problem in hardware
anyway, so other programs don't have problems.
While I was looking over my logic board for the above
described problem, I saw something I'd never noticed before.
Underneath the power supply, about an inch and a half behind the
VGC chip, at coordinates C-4 on the logic board, is a pair of pins
sticking out, like for a jumper block. They are labeled "W1".
Now, I know there are some on a ROM 3 motherboard in this general
location, to disable the control panel CDA. However, I've never
heard of any being present on a ROM 1, which is what I have.
I'm not about to short them with a jumper block without knowing
what they are for. For all I know it's a power takeoff or something.
This is NOT the ones at the far back of the machine, labeled FAN.
Anyone have any idea what they are for?
Last question. I'm trying to squeeze just a little more out
of my TWGS. I've done all the cache RAM, GAL, etc upgrades, but I
think I got a sub standard CPU from WDC. It crashes randomly, every
once in awhile, if I go 10mhz or above, more often as you increase
the clock rate above 10mhz. I was wondering, does anyone sell like
a clip or clamp on heat sink for chips of the type used for the
65816 CPU which is used in TWGS or Zips? Thanks!
