Pull out a textbook on computer science. Look up 'hashing'. Basically,
you can increase the speeds of things if you store tables of where things
are, such as where each line is in memory. Plus, there's the fact that
the Apple II's memory is all over the place, that means that you have to
buffer things a bit more.
(As I've never disassembled AW Classic, this is 100% pure speculation.
