Help with ProDOS file structure!

I keep on doing the stupidest thing: in ProTERM v3.1's editor, I load a big,
important file, delete everything but the one line I want to send to the modem,
and then forget to press escape; so when I hit <openapple> 's', I save the line
onto the BIG file...ack. This has happened to me about 3 or 4 times. Here's
my question: How do I edit the file's information to tell ProDOS that the file
is 10 times as long as it thinks it is? I've tried increasing the "number of
blocks" and "end of file pointer" with ProSel 16's Zap, but the file, upon
examination, only contains '00' for the specified length...where's the real
length stored? And what's a 'Case Implementation'?

What I do is copy a big file onto a 3.5" disk, and then manually copy the
important file block by block onto the dummy file on the 3.5". This works, but
it takes time and is dangerous.

Any help? Thanks...
