Re: A "decent" language for II's
There is one language rather like Forth, in that it's threaded, but using
infix notation, rather than Polish. It is, moreover, configured for the
Apple II. It's called MINT, and it's fully documented in a book published
by Academic Press - ISBN 0-12-286982-6. I was, at one time, in touch with
the authors, and hoped to obtain a disk containing it in executable form.
Sadly, this didn't pan out, but due to the odd characteristics of
threaded languages in general, there is sufficient information provided
in the book to bootstrap it from that alone. It wouldn't be a trivial
task, but then again, it wouldn't be impossible, either. The book
contains the complete source-code of both the interpreter (or kernel) as
well as the compiler, and several other utilities.
I also have a printout of the source in Fortran (ugh), and it might be
possible to compile that under ByteWorks upcoming Fortran precompiler,
and then use that to construct an Apple II version, using the assembler
which is part of the system.
