Help with ][ e and modems

I'm very glad to find this newsgroup. I hope to get an answer to some
really basic questions. My dad has a ][ e (not a //e) and would like to
get online. 

I would like some advice about modems and communications packages (prices,
flexibility, etc).

Further, can the ][ e be run like a 'dumb' terminal (ie: drop amodem into
an expansion slot, connect a phone line, dial the phone and then 

The only specs I have on my dad's machine are that it has 80 k of ram (I
think), a special card that allows 80 columns of text. He does not have the
super serial card. He has several available expansion slots.
