Not really. Individual messages should be limited to 64k, because
some systems cannot deal with longer messages. This is normally
handled by posting no more than three BinSCII segments in each message.
Regarding total volume: I have been somewhat concerned at the amount
of data coming through c.b.a2 in recent months. cba2 is regularly
listed in the top ten newsgroups for total volume.
One point I find particularly annoying is when someone re-posts a
file within a few days (or weeks) of its original posting (when there
was nothing wrong with the original).
If the group gets too big, some sites may think twice about carrying
it. This was in some danger of happening in New Zealand a couple of
years ago - there was talk of not importing groups which had low
readership and high volume, and cba2 would have been one of the first
to go.
I don't think this is likely to happen, now that a reasonable charging
regime has been set up.
As the Postnews program warns you, someone somewhere has to pay for
news postings, and the more volume there is, the more it will cost to
sites all around the world.
Try to be reasonable.
