Sounds like it is not a compatibility problem.  If you are able to see it 
on the desktop, format it, and copy files to it it is probably 
compatible.  The ProDOS error you mentioned is a catch-all for I/O 
problems.  Sounds like it might be damaged disks, or a very dirty drive head 
that is damaging your disk.  When was the last time you cleaned it?
