This is normal.  ER stands for Environmental Record, which is where all
default settings are stored, such as your default data drive or path. 
Another item that is stored in this file is the "current date" that was
entered from the keyboard (for clockless Apples), or was read in
automatically from a clock.  This way, users of clockless Apples who use
AppleWorks frequently have a recent (or possibly today's) date to start
from, and usually only have to change the date instead of the month and
year too.  Therefore, this file is automatically rewritten every time you 
start AW, in addition to when you change standard settings.  This is also 
why you can't use a write-protected program disk.

As to why your slot 1 got changed, I don't know.
