Todd P. Whitesel (toddpw@blend.ugcs.caltech.edu) screamed from comp.sys.apple2:
: p.s. -- the VOC was not intended to be used to break copy protection, the
: sync cleanup is there for a different reason, namely to stabilize weak video
: sources. However the same processing defeats most video copy protection
: schemes so naturally Apple doesn't draw much attention to it, which is
: smart of them. No need to tempt people to get themselves into legal trouble
: with large entertainment companies who have lots of yuppie lawyers like Apple.
Yup, exactly. Most copy protections rely on screwing around with H sync so a
clean direct dub is impossible. TBCs and in this case the VOC corrects this
"problem". This was the same as the early cable "scrambling" where running
it through a time base corrector would defeat it. Nowadays, of course, it's
more complex than that.
