Death of IIe

I guess this comes under the heading of "where have you been, buddy",
but I was shocked (saddened, distraught, etc.) when I read this excerpt
from one of the Apple, Inc. Technical Information notes (concerning
the history of Apple II products).  Whatever happened to "Apple II
forever"?
