Bad programming. I've heard reasonable quality digitized noise coming out
of the PC "click" speaker. Remember "RealSound"? It almost became the PC
digitized sound standard before the SoundBlaster. A bit fuzzy, but easily
recognizable, even for digitized speech.
Not that this is a slight on ID. It is rather pointless in this era to
optimize PC-speaker code. On the Apple ][, it was important to get as much
as possible out of clicks, because that was all you could expect people
to have.
