New HFS?

It appears that there is a new HFS standard. When I format an 800k disk 
at school, I get a dialog box asking me if I want to format it in Mac 
800k format or HFS Interchange. Since the latter was the default 
selection, I selected it. 

When I got home and put it in my GS, it wouldn't recognize it. AAAGGHH! 
Now I have to wait until I get back to school to get the info transfered 
to a disk I can read on my GS.

Is there a reason for another HFS standard? Is there going to be an 
update for the HFS FST. (I think I already know the answer to this, but I 
had to ask anyways)
