Thumping components (monitors, disks, etc)
My, my how the world has changed.
Someone posted that 'thumping' a GS monitor to solve the bouncing screen
problem was 'not reccommended' because of all the nasty things it could do.
Well, let me give you a Backin-Myday Act of 1903 commentary...
(the Backin-Myday Act of 1903 was the ruling that...1) Schoolhouses had to be
built at least five miles from the homes of all future grandfathers; 2)that the
route must be uphill both ways; and 3) that there must be at least 15" of snow
on the ground from September-June)
Personal Experience:
A known good disk in a known-good Disk ][ on a ][+ causes frequent
recalibration (all-too-often resulting in "I/O ERROR"). Solution: Start
beating sharply on the top of the drive when the buzzing starts. 85% of the
time, this prevents the error from actually appearing, and thus prevents the
program from crashing (if one is running).
(DO NOT ATTEMPT with the UniDisk 5.25!!)
Disappearance of text on a Monitor ][ or Monitor /// due to bad internal
connections to Video Input jack: Beat on the @#$! thing. Usually works.
Rumor:
Poor performance from an Apple /// once it warms up? Set the ProFile and
monitor aside, pick the CPU up, and DROP IT about 4" to the desktop to reseat
the chips; then pu tthe machine back together again.
Disclaimer: If you actually try any of this, AND something goes wrong, it
isn't my fault.
