You lose resolution doing this, unless you are outputting to a 16-bit DAC.
Check out OctaMED on the Amiga, or any PC MOD player on anything less than a
Gravis board.  Also, it's pretty damn computationally intensive, since you
have to take into account the volume and frequency of each of the input
samples.  The PPC is fast, but it's not THAT fast...  you need a dedicated DSP
to do this with any kind of efficiency.
