I have some miscellaneous (sp? hmm...) comments on this thread.
To Jimmy, good luck, you'll need it! :-> (dumb IRQ setting...)
About buying certain Mac models and upgrade later:
Apple's motherboard upgrades are/were never cheap, if you decide
to buy one know, be prepare to pay a premium for an upgrade.
If your current computers is doing all the job fine (and with in
reasonable time), there is no reason to switch platforms just
because the new computer seems soo much faster. They have their
shares of problems too. If not, time to upgrade.
About 486 and stuff:
Yeah, they're decent, but they also have lots of darksides, lame
*DOS (all kinds), IRQ settings, inherent design limits (VLB...).
And don't be fooled to buy a 486 now and upgrade to a Pentium
later, most if not all of the 486 motherboards out there are 32
bit still, and you won't be able to take advantage of what the
Pentium really can offer.
PC's always have had some cool hardware, but they don't have any good
firmwares (top reason I love my //gs), neither does Mac.
