Connecting on the road

I'm trying to track down an article I read earlier this year in a computer
magazine (can't recall which one, hence the difficulty).

The article dealt with 'commando' techniques of connecting a modem to
non-modular motel telephone systems. (On a recent trip to Chicago, I was
stuck in a hotel room for a whole week without electronic access!) The
crux
of the article was a disection of the wiring of standard telephone systems,
along with instructions on how to build your own connection system (even
including Radio Shack part numbers for the various clips, etc).

My recollection is that it was a story 'side-bar' as opposed to a primary
article. Any and all help will be much appreciated!
