Re: IIe to IIgs? {was Re: What Apple II to buy if not a GS?}

I believe the IIgs upgrade kit actually replaces the motherboard, and the
bottom/back panel assembly. The upgraded GS is, in fact a full-fledged GS, in
a bigger case that's a little sturdier. The disadvantages:
1. You pull a perfectly good ][e out of service.
2. You cannot take full advantage of products designed to match the GS case
3. If it is an older ][e, the case will remain beige
4. Your keyboard stays stuck to the CPU cabinet
5. The cabinet doesn't open as fully as the GS cabinet does for service.

The advantages:
1. You pull an outmoded ][e out of service
2. You can take advantage of products built around the ][e case (Monitor ][,
    stand for Monitor ///, original System Saver, etc.
3. If it is an older ][e, it will remain beige.
4. The ][e keyboard is a lot nicer than any ADB keyboard!
5. The keyboard stays put in front of the CPU cabinet
6. You can operate a ][e with the lid open and still set a monitor on top
(CAREFULLY, of course)

So, I guess a lot of the advantages/disadvantages depend on how you look at it!
