Re: working around blown SCSI fuse
*I've got a Prodrive 100 with a blown micro fuse.
*(Diagnosed by: drive spins up if data cable not connected but
*doesn't spin up
*if data cable connected)
*
*I have a Syquest drive that supplies termination power, but turning
*it on is a
*nuisance because w/o a cartridge in it, it hangs ProDOS 8.
*
*As I see it, I have a number of bad options to fix this:
*
*1) buy another SCSI device I can leave on - not worth the money.
*(Actually, I have been thinking of getting a tape drive, so that
*might be the
*ticket.)
*
*2) buy a RAMFast which both will supply term power and will probably
*tolerate a
*Syquest with no card - some expense and draws too much power
*
*3) solder a wire over the fuse - not recommended by Quantum
*
*4) Patch P8 to not poll the Syquest - an excellent option IMHO, but
*I don't
*know where to look and if it is even possible. Is the problem in P8
*or the DMA
*SCSI ROM?
*
*5) Always turn the Syquest on and leave a cart in - I hate waiting
*for it to
*spin up and rarely use the Syquest.
*
*Does anyone have a clue on #4, or an opinion on #2 and #3?
*Is bypassing the fuse so bad/dangerous?
*
*Weird thing, the fuse is blown, but that only makes a diff depending
*on the
*configuration.
*
You can buy a 1 amp quick blo fuse an solder it in parallel with the blown
fuse. I did this to a drive about a year ago and it has been working fine.
The fuses are about $.50 each at any good Electronics store.
