No you don't.  AppleWorks 3.0 supports auxiliary slot, standard slot
and IIgs memory expansion cards without any patches.

AppleWorks 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 only support the standard 128k.
AppleWorks 1.3 supports a standard slot RAM card.
AppleWorks 2.0 supports a IIgs's extra memory.
AppleWorks 3.0 supports IIe auxiliary slot RAM cards.
