Following is a summary of the data collected from the survey responses of
the readers/users of this feed (c.s.apple2/misc).
Since the survey's intent was not one of preciseness, but to gather a
general picture of the users, the results are presented in a prose format,
rather than a grand statistical presentation with recognized differences
between things like "means" and "averages". One must also recognize that
the relatively few respondents do not necessarily represent the majority,
and therefore, any grand statistical analysis would have a high likelihood
to be skewed, and stand on feet of clay.
And, in finality, please respect that the casualness of a survey of this
type can prompt some smart alec responses such as, "Old enough to know
better", to a question such as the query regarding age. Therefore, in
summary, the survey analysis MIGHT be in the ball park as far as
statistical reliability is concerned, but that's about as far as your
scribe can go.
Your reactions will be welcomed and appreciated - but no flames, please
:-)
NUMBER OF POSTINGS OF QUESTIONNAIRE: 2
NUMBER OF RESPONDENTS: 44
And, following the format of the questionnaire:
#1 - E-MAIL ADDRESS? - No big thing here. I just wanted to be able to get
back to any respondents at a later time (after I killed the headers in
their transmissions).
#2 - FIRST NAME? - Like #1, I just wanted to be able to make friendly
notes to respondents in case it was required.
#3 - HANDLE? - Over half had true-blue, oddball handles. The list read
like a "Who's Who" from the movie, "Top Gun". Heading the list of wierdos
were Animal Cracker, ChipHead (your scribe), Radagast and Tigersharke.
Summary = not all who enjoy the network are completely serious.
#4 - CITY AND STATE? - Surprise! One fourth of the respondents live
outside the continental United States. They fell into the groupings of
Canada (2), Europe (4) and Pacific Ocean countries (5). The remainder
were spread pretty well throughout the U. S., with California and Florida
leading with four each and Michigan and Ohio had three apiece.
#5 - AGE? Surprise number two! - The typical user is not just a young
high school/college eggheaded phreak.
NUMBER OF RESPONDENTS - BY AGE:
Numerals in body of graph represent number of respondents at that age.
For example, there were 3 each at ages 24 and 25:
R |
E 5-| 5
S |
P 4-| 4
O |
N 3-| 33
D |
E 2-| 2 22 2 2
N |
T 1-| 1 1 11 1 1 1111 11 1 1 1 11 1
S |__________________________________________________________________
--AGE >> 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 60 65
Excludes one who gave only a smart alec reply.
Average = 30, excluding the one aged 66.
#6 - OCCUPATION? - No new news here:
Students = 43%
Computer related (programmers, operators, etc.) = 25%
Electronics = 9%
#7 - AVERAGE TIMES PER WEEK LOGON? - Average was 10 with the mean at 7.
#8 - OK TO PUBLISH ALL INFO IN RESPONSES? - There were four respondents
who requested that their identities not be published. This was
accomplished in the data base summary by not entering the answers to
questions 1, 2 and 3 - references to addresses and names. However, all
their other info was included such as ages and home town (as explained in
the preamble of the survey questionnaire).
EPILOG - If you would like to be blessed with any of the survey's detail,
please let me know why and we'll try to work something out.
