Oops ! In my original post I said " I tried a different keyboard and cable
 and it worked fine" What I meant to say was: when I tried my keyboard and
cable on a different machine it worked fine.  When I tried a different
keyboard and cable on my machine I had the same symptons (open-apple key
appears stuck in some applications).  

I don't have a joystick connected right now; but I just had my old
joystick short out and overheat just before having these problems.  So
I'll start looking in this area and let everyone know the outcome.
