Your best solution is to retain this configuration (IDE card in slot
7, 5.25" drive interface card in slot 6), and use a program on the
hard drive to boot the 5.25" disk for protected programs.

I posted a freeware program selector called QUITTER to
comp.binaries.apple2 a few days ago (written by Allan Honey and
myself), and this program includes the ability to boot another slot.
It should be renamed to QUITTER.SYSTEM and set up as the first file
with name ending in '.SYSTEM' in your hard drive's root directory (on
the first partition).

When you boot the drive, you are in QUITTER.SYSTEM. To run a program
on the hard drive (or on any other unprotected ProDOS disk), press ESC
and you will enter the Birds Better Bye program selector.

Alternatively, if you want to boot from a non-ProDOS disk (including a
protected disk), put the disk into slot 6, drive 1, and press the "6"
key. QUITTER.SYSTEM will attempt to boot from slot 6.

There is a less elegant solution: if you reboot the computer and press
Control-Reset before ProDOS has been loaded from the hard drive, you
will be dropped into Applesoft BASIC. You can then type PR#6 to boot
from the floppy drive.
