Okay, old IIGS, New Life...

Hi all...

I'm a Mac user (by default) but I still have a IIGS at home. It is a
plain vanilla GS, no accel, and no HD. Frankly, this is useless to my
family and I want to see what I can do to beef it up for them because
they can't even afford a cheap Mac thru my .edu discount at the
College. I can get the software thru ftp.apple.com, and I may be able
to schwing a HD and SCSI card thru people 'round here for about $200.
But I've been out of the Apple II world so long that I no longer know
what is and isn't possible. I couldn't find any FAQ, but if there is
one, please point me -- I don't wanna be accused of wasting any more
bandwidth than I already do. I know the GS went thru some ROM revisions
- how will this affect system software, if at all? I think I have 01
ROMS, but like I said, it's been dormant for awhile. (My GS was also
one of the rare ones that had some major ROM bug that prompted a
motherboard switch...all done quickly and condescendingly by my local
Apple II dealer...)
I've also got an Apple II+...but I've given up an that one...I just
don't have to cash for the 80-col card, etc, etc, etc, caps lock
generator, etc, etc for that 15-year-old beast.
My question is how do I upgrade the GS with HD, and probably
accelaration so that it's usable. Here's the caveat...I can't spend
that much...what do you people out in Apple II land have for config
now?
Thanx for help in advance...

The Catt.
