Actually, us physics-types use however many dimensions are necessary ;)
Probably the most common number is six (such as for phase-space; three
position and three momenta dimensions).  It's just an abstraction,
anyway -- mathematics is a tool we use to describe the world.  It has no
physical reality nor meaning in itself (he says as he quickly ducks to
avoid being hit by flying debris thrown by annoyed mathmaticians).
