gzip is GNU's version of UNIX compress. It compresses much better than
compress.

I was planning to port gzip, but I'm already working on lots of things.
Does anyone else have plans to to it?

BTW, gzip'ed archives are more often than not tar'ed underneath. GNU's tar
program automatically handles gzipped tar files. The correct extension for
these files is .tgz, but .gz is also used, implying the tar part.
