Hmm. There was a common bug in Apple //gs colour monitors, but I can't
remember it. Anyway, very common reasons for behaviour as you experienced
it are broken or cold solder joints. Those you get at the high voltage
transformator (we call it "Zeilentrafo", which means "line transformator" ...
dunno the term in English), and at the connectors for the high frequency
wires which "steer" the electron beam (again, I only know the German terms
for this, but I guess you know what I mean).
Look at the solder joints, if any seem broken or cold, resolder. Heck,
resolder the critical ones anyway, just to be sure it's not that, and
try again. With high probability, that'll cure your monitor.
