How can I archive old apple 2 software to safe storage?

I have recently revived my old Apple 2 which has spent the last decade or
so in the basement. Quite a few of the disks are no longer readable, making me
realize that I would like to archive what I have remained to somekind of
more recent medium which is probably safer (ie. IBM PC archives?).

This is compounded by the fact that a good deal of the software from that
day was sold copy protected, making it difficult to write straight archivers.

I am looking for programs which would let me move an image of apple disks
to an IBM PC for backup. This way, if the original ever got corrupted, I
could resotre it to a new apple 2 format disk.

many years ago, I could probably have written such a program myself, but
I forgot how to interface to RWTS long ago.

Any pointers on how I could do this? The apple has a serial port, though I'm
not sure it if still functions anymore (my 80 column card doesn't anymore...)
Would some of the Apple2 emulator converters do this somehow?

Thanks for your help.
