It selects the first icon, alphabetically, starting with the letter
you typed.

If you type the second letter within a short period of time, it
will think you are trying to type multiple letters in a word, not single
letters.

If you type multiple letters quickly, it will consider them all
part of the same 'word' and go to the icon that best matches what you
have typed [though it will jump around while you're typing the word, since
there are different "best matches" depending on how many characters you type].
Other than that, I don't really get what you're saying in the
explanation above. It sounds like you're hitting multiple characters
quickly, and it thinks you're typing a whole word.
If all else fails, wait a second or so, then start typing again..
or use the arrow keys to move around. I find keyboard navigation _very_
helpful. Only when I'm copying files or throwing files away do I use
a mouse/trackball in the Finder. This is in coalition with my OpenIt Finder
Extension though, so I can open deep folders (or applications in deep
folders) without mouse (or keyboard) navigating down through a million
levels of folders. [OpenIt lets you type in a pathname of a folder or
S16/SYS/EXE. It opens folders, or launches the other types.]
