Very much like in Standard File dialogs. Type the first letter (or
letters) of the icon to select it.

If you type a single letter, Finder will highlight the first icon in
the current window (or on the desktop, if it is active) which matches
that letter.

For example, if you have a SYSTEM folder in the top left corner, and a
disk icon called SECOND, then typing 'S' will select the disk icon.
Typing 'SY' instead would select the System folder (assuming you
didn't have another icon starting with those letters).

You have to wait a short time after typing a partial name before
typing the next one, or Finder will assume you are continuing the
previous name (e.g. type 'S' then 'Y' too quickly, and Finder will
think you mean 'SY'). You only need to wait about half a second. You
can also press the CLEAR key to make Finder forget the typed name.

You can press the TAB and SHIFT-TAB keys to move between icons in
alphabetic and reverse alphabetic order.

The arrow keys move around icons horizontally and vertically.

The ESC key deselects all icons and makes the front window active.

There is another key to make the desktop active, but I can't remember
what it is (don't have the documentation handy).

This is all documented in the release notes, or in Finder Help, or one
of the text files included with the system software (on SystemTools2) -
I'm not sure which. Why don't you read that?
