I have been this route many times, and despite what it says in the TC
and DD manuals, the order of installation DOES matter. I have settled
on the following order for a very nice installed version which gives
me a (99%) trouble-free run:
1) Fresh copy of AppleWorks 3.0
2) Apply patcher 1.61
3) Install TimeOut
It is not necessary to install UltraMacros 3.1 if you intend to
install Ultra 4. You simply need the original UM3.1 disk handy.
4) Install Ultra 4, including the Init manager
5) Install Double Data 2.0
6) Install Total Control 2.0 (but DO NOT install Inits! Just copy
the init files from their folder on the TC disk to the AW.Inits
folder on your AppleWorks location
I think steps 5 and 6 are truly interchangeable, but this is the way
I usually do it
7) Apply patches from AW3.0 Companion Plus if you have it.
I have not found any conficting patches with Companion Plus with any
of the AW enhancements I have installed
8) Apple patches from SuperPatch. I have only tried SP 7.0. Some
SP patches do cause problems, especially Blister Quit. This is
shame because it is one of my favourites. I haven't tried it
from a later version of SP so I can't comment.
At this stage installation should be complete. I run this set up
successfully on:
Apple IIe enhanced
1 Meg RamFactor
4 HMz Zip Chip
Apple High Speed SCSI card (DMA off)
Quantum 52 Meg HD
Apple 3.5 disk with superdrive controller
and
Apple IIgs
2 Meg CV Tech GS Memory with 1 meg Apple Memory piggbacked
8/16 Zip GS
CMS SCSI II card
CMS (Seagate) 30 Meg HD
Both machines are running ProDOS 2.0.3.
I, too, am looking forward to Quadriga. It should solve what few
problems remain (I still have the *very* occasional inexplicable
crash, but nothing compared with what you are experiencing)
Now, if they would only rewrite TimeOut Telecom to include VT-100
emulation, life would be almost complete... :-)
