SCSI problem - please help!

I was hoping that someone here on the net can provide me and my
hard drive some assistance. First I'll list the equipment I'm
using:

Apple ][gs
4 megs RAM
CMS A2S SCSI controller card with 3/1/90 roms
344 meg CDC SCSI drive

The drive was taken out of a Sun 3/120 and was sold at a fairly
good price (which makes me slightly suspicious...). I saw the drive
run in his Sun, but since bringing it home, it's given me troubles.
When I hard boot the drive/computer, the drive is active and
completes an initial search. ProDOS and GS/OS recognizes that the
card and drive are there, but I can't seem to low-level format the
damn thing. When running the software that came with the card, it
recognizes the card, says the drive has a SCSI ID of #0, but
displays a message:

        DRIVE INOPERATIVE: $04, $44

I concluded (in an optimistic fashion) that this error code meant
that the drive was not the right format (which it's not). It then
asks if I want to format the drive; I reply yes. It defaults to an
interleave of 0 and commences on trying to format the drive. After
two to three seconds of hearing the drive "search," the program
returns:

        UNABLE TO FORMAT: $04, $02
        POSSIBLY WRONG INTERLEAVE SETTING
DO YOU WISH TO CHANGE INTERLEAVE?

I've tried after interleave between 0 and 31; the program will not
any value above 31. The card is definitely speaking with the drive,
but "in different languages," so to speak. I must admit that my
hardware knowledge is _weak_ compared to the software side, but I'm
still almost certain I have everything set up correctly. This setup
is a project of mine (kind of like restoring a car), and I might
have cut a few corners to many. All of the hardware is second-hand
(or more) and I do not have any documentation/manuals for the card,
but my diagnostics indicate that everything (aside from the drive)
is operating correctly.
If anyone out there can give me some assistance (manuals,
software, friendly advice), I'd truly appreciate it, and if accrued
any expenses in giving the advice, I will compensate you. In
addition to this, I ask that you mail all responses to the above
address as I am unable to frequent the net as much as I used to.

Thanks,
Craig Spradling

P.S. Like most other Apple fans, I have had great difficulty in
finding local help for my Apple; if any of you know of good
businesses, user groups, or bulletin boards in the Houston area,
I'd appreciate them as well.
