You are correct in this assumption. The terminal emulations were
programmed by trial and error instead of any true documentation.

|In general, Kermit uses both Basic and Pascal entries to the video firmware
|which is major uncool and creates nasty effects.

This is because the original program was written way back in (I
believe it was) 1981. Back then, I don't think that the authors had
the inclination to disassemble the video ROMs of an Apple II and
duplicate them -- 48K was precious memory back then. Keep in mind
that the 80 column Apple II line wasn't released back then, either.
No one has bothered to take the effort to fix it because it isn't
broken (or works well enough that no one has cared), so they has just
built upon the old input/output mechanisms instead of rebuilding them.

|I don't want to really complain about all this since Kermit is free, but maybe
|someone knows how to solve these problems...?

Try to cope with what you have right now. Kermit-65 IS being majorly
updated at this time. Hopefully, it will be completed RSN.

Just so you know--although you didn't hear it from me, there is a
Kermit for the GS that is being work on as we speak, if you happen to
have a GS.
