 here's the scoop (it's been a while since i've done this).
 you need to set the number of blocks (?) to 64 or something so you
 have some place to record the MIDI.
 make sure you tell soundsmith that you want MIDI in.

 you're all set then! all you need to do is 'Play' and start playing your
 keyboard.

 BUT,
  -you will only be able to play the first sound that you loaded into
   soundsmith
  -it retains NO MIDI info other than the key you pressed. ie no velocity,
   duration, etc.
  -it does not record in real time.  i played something into it and when i 
   played it back, it was something completely different! it looked cool to
   watch all the little eq's light up but that's all.

 i really don't think the soundsmith is capeable of any serious (or not 
 serious MIDI work).  if the next version was released, maybe they'd fix
 it but it doesn't look like that will happen.

ps: you might want to try mastertracks pro for the GS. i don't have it or know
    were to get it though.
