That's the problem.  ProTerm doesn't recognize a data rate of 14.4 or 14400.
It only recognizes CONNECT, CONNECT 300, CONNECT 1200, CONNECT 2400, 
CONNECT 4800, CONNECT 9600, CONNECT 19200, and CONNECT 38400.  So you have
to get your modem to send one of these results.

Fortunately I have my modem manual handy right now... Try using the following
INIT string:
ATX4W1S95=44
