I had heard that there was a version of Z-modem that would work over 7-bit
lines, but that was awhile ago, and haven't heard much else about it.

I've never used Kermit on the A][, but can't you adjust the packet size? I
know when I have to download stuf I set the packet length to 1000
characters, which speeds things up considerably.
