I have used an HP DeskJet with my //c for about 2 years. I added the optional
Epson FX/80 emulation cartridge and it works great. The only problem is when
you add the emulation you end up with a very high quality Epson and lose
a lot of the native DeskJet fonts and features such as landscape printing.

Some word processing packages will allow you to define your own printer
controls for bold, u/l, itall., etc. but if you want graphics or DTP you need
to have a driver for the printer.
