I don't have problem using SoundSmith v1.0.1 on my system...  You should use
System 6, which is much better than System 5.0.4 and requires similar 
memory.

I use NoiseTracker to play all my SoundSmith/NoiseTracker songs.  I don't
think SS would sound any better than NT.  One thing I really hate is how
long it take SS to load the instruments.  ( I suppose you can save the DOC )
I prefer useing tne NT MODule format.  Besides, NT looks cool.

Another option to play SoundSmith songs is to use Richard's shareware 
DeskTracker.  I think it can play songs in the background as long as you're
in the GS/OS environment.
