IIc and IIe questions

I have a IIc that will start to boot up and then quits, leaving a couple of
bracket chacters on the screen.  I plugged in a disk II to the motherboard
and it did the same thing, so I guess the problem is not in the drive.
Anyone have an idea what the cause could be?
 
I also have an unenhanced IIe and I am curious if it's possible to use the
enhanced chip set from the IIc in the IIe.  Which chips are included in the
set?  What are their locations on the IIe motherboard?
 
Also, who publishs a good book on repairing Apple 8 bit computers?
